Ipako sa Krus Si Mideo Cruz!

Nakatrabaho ko na si Mideo Cruz dati. Sa isang performance art festival. Sabihin na lang natin na ang pagiging “subtle”  ay wala sa mga katangian ng kanyang estetika. Actually, karamihan sa  mga nagperform doon ay hindi matatawag na kimi at mahinhin. May nag-ahit  ng bulbol. “No to Bush!” sigaw niya pagkatapos. Wala naman  silang narinig na umangal na kinatawan ng US Embassy. May isang Eastern  European na inuuntog lang ang noo sa pader nang mahigit 20 minutes  hanggang may isang linya ng dugo na gumagapang pababa. May Hapon na  hinampas ang sariling noo ng makapal na salamin at may sinulat na  Japanese characters na hindi ko naintindihan. May mga nag-ingay gamit  ang mga mixer/laptop na pinasakan ng kung ano-anong tunog na kinuha ata mula sa pinakamalapit na construction site at rumaragasang imburnal.

Foreign artists support 'blasphemous' Cruz; CCP urged to reopen exhibit

“As an artist, it is important to view expression with equality, to be willing to say what the art, as if a separate life, wishes us to say,” said Lewis Gesner, an artist in the US.

“The artist is responsible, even if it is not asked for, to express what the art wishes. If an artist is silent or invisible because they do not want to offend someone in the public, they may be doing damage, by not expressing what art wishes,” Gesner said, adding that “art is important to the world and society, even when it goes against what opinions of others are, and what common knowledge is.”

Gesner described himself as “both an artist and a Christian.” While he “values highly the life of Christ and live my life with faith, which is very important to me, I see nothing positive in oppressing artistic expression, regardless of the content, or even, of the sincerity of it,” he said.

I would like to invite all the members of the media to a tour of the backspaces of the cultural center so you can witness the many artists who are lovingly and passionately crafting their next gifts for the public. So you can see the floor boards, the walls, the corridors where this exciting process called art happens; feel the energy of this wonderful exchange and engagement of creative minds; so that we may all better appreciate where art comes from, how art is created and why we all need to staunchly uphold this space called artistic freedom.

In the 1950s there was a move to ban the teaching of Jose Rizal’s novels ‘Noli Me Tangere’ and ‘El Filibusterismo’, the triumph of knowledge over unenlightenment has made it possible for us today to relish this artistic work as one of the nation’s great cultural treasures. The musical version of Noli Me Tangere is now playing at the little theater. A writer and a choreographer envisioned a natural catastrophe of landslides and floods because of man’s disrespect of the environment and way before Ondoy and the recent natural calamities – they created the dance piece “Encantada” which is opening this week at the ccp main theater. We continue to create and to offer gifts to our public inspite of the difficulties we face in funding.

We need you to champion the arts and not denigrate it. We need you to support the arts instead of threatening to defund it. The upholding of artistic freedom should be everyone’s steadfast responsibility – for it is only in this freedom that we can all live side by side in abiding tolerance and soulful creativity.

This imagery isn’t new. In fact, you’d see this theme in art school thesis exhibits. Mideo Cruz’s artworks did not shock me. I was shocked by how most Filipinos were offended by them. This whole controversy is not an issue of whether Cruz’s artworks are offensive or not, this is an issue of how most Filipinos look at art. The country doesn’t lack artists who impart challenging and progressive ideas, the country lacks a refined appreciation for art.
